Hattie arrived in India in 1892 and began her missionary work at Harda in Madhya Pradesh. Initially, she supervised a girls’ school in this region, which grew from strength to strength under her tireless work and care.
According to the prevalent Indian customs, the parents usually forced their daughters into marriage at a very early age. But Hattie put great efforts to change such mindset and prodded the Indians to allow their daughters to complete their studies before given in marriage for her own better future.
Hattie Judson ministry in India
Soon the school strength grew from 10 to 37 as her energy and enthusiasm encouraged many families to send their girls to school. Hattie, who was known to be a cheerful and kind person, lived a sacrificial life to protect Christ’s flock placed under her care. In 1897, when a terrible famine and plague hit Central India, Hattie rushed to Mahoba to assist the relief workers.
She completely involved herself in nursing the sick and feeding the poor. She gave all her earnings to the mission work so that the people could live. The strenuous work at Mahoba took a toll on her health. She fell ill because of Typhoid and went to be with the Lord in 1897. Even during her illness, her constant longing was to get up and care for the children.
