This was the first time that John Mark was mentioned in the Bible. Though he was mentioned only a few times in Bible, no one is insignificant in the eyes of God.
John Mark, the cousin of Barnabas, accompanied Paul and Barnabas as a helper on their missionary journey. But when they came to Perga in Pamphylia, Mark stepped back and returned to Jerusalem, which disappointed Paul.
Split between Paul and Barnabas
So, Paul disagreed with Barnabas when he proposed to take Mark again with them on their next missionary journey. Eventually, it caused a split between Paul and Barnabas and the latter took Mark and went to Cyprus. Mark then faithfully served the Lord, which made even Paul mention Mark as his ‘fellow worker’. When Paul was in prison, he wrote to Timothy, “Take Mark, and bring him with you: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.”
Paul also instructed the Colossian Church to receive Mark. Such was the restoration Mark had in ministry. Mark probably rendered a great assistance to Apostle Peter also in his ministry as Peter referred to him in his epistle as ‘my son. Mark also is said to have gone to Egypt and became the first person to establish Churches in Africa.
He founded and served in the Church in Alexandria. A majority of scholars consider him as the author of ‘Gospel of Mark’ in the Bible. This gospel introduces Jesus as the Son of God and gives a call to unbelievers to repent and to the believers, to the “Great Commission” of the Lord!
Beloved, in your failures, remember that there is always an open door for you to continue on the path of faith!
