Asher - The Eighth Tribe of Israel
Richness and Blessing: The Quiet Prosperity of the Tribe of Asher
Asher was the eighth son of Jacob, born to Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid. His name (Asher) translates directly to "Happy," "Blessed," or "Fortunate," marking Leah’s joyful declaration at his birth: "Happy am I, for the women will call me blessed!" True to his name, the Tribe of Asher became synonymous with abundance, royal delicacies, and quiet stability.

1. Prophesied Royal Dainties and Iron Gates
When Jacob pronounced his deathbed blessing over his sons in Genesis 49, he foretold a future of extraordinary agricultural wealth for Asher:
"Asher’s food shall be rich, and he shall yield royal dainties." — Genesis 49:20
Decades later, Moses expanded on this blessing in Deuteronomy 33:24–25, highlighting both material richness and enduring security:
"Most blessed of sons be Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him dip his foot in oil. Your bars shall be iron and bronze, and as your days, so shall your strength be." — Deuteronomy 33:24–25
The phrase "dip his foot in oil" pointed directly to the endless olive groves that would cover their future territory. Asher's primary tribal symbol became an olive tree or a cup of royal delicacies.
2. Strategic Coastal Wealth and Devout Legacy
When Canaan’s land was divided by lot, Asher received a fertile strip along the northern Mediterranean coast, extending from the base of Mount Carmel up to Sidon and Tyre.
-
Agricultural Powerhouse: The soil was ideal for growing olives, wheat, and wine. Asher supplied fine olive oil and produce not only to Israel's kings but also to international trade routes.
-
Defensive Position: Situated on the northern coastal frontier, their territory required strong fortification, fulfilling Moses's promise that their security gates would be as tough as iron and bronze.
-
The Prophetess Anna: In the New Testament, when infant Jesus was brought to the Temple in Jerusalem, it was the prophetess Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher who instantly recognized Him as the Redeemer and gave thanks to God (Luke 2:36–38). Her presence proved that even during centuries of dispersion, faithful remnants of Asher preserved their devotion.
