King Frederick IV Biography

In 1620, the village of Tranquebar came under the authority of the Danish Crown, and Frederick was keen on introducing Christ to the gentiles in India. He was the head of the Lutheran church in Denmark and tried to start Christian missionary work in South India. His efforts to set up the Tranquebar mission almost failed for the lack of interested candidates ready to go as far as India as a missionary.

Hence, the King started looking for people outside his country, and that is when he found the two Germans Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau. Frederick himself commissioned and financed their journey and mission work in Tranquebar.

Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau were the first protestant missionaries to India, and their ministry significantly changed the course of mission work in India. Frederick’s encouragement helped Ziegenbalg establish schools, colleges, and churches that resulted in a change in Indian society. King Frederick IV
