Issachar - the Nineth Tribe of Israel
Scholars of the Times: The Wisdom and Quiet Strength of the Tribe of Issachar
Issachar was the ninth son of Jacob and the fifth son born to Leah. His name (Yissakhar) translates directly to "There is a reward" or "Man of wages," marking Leah’s belief that God had rewarded her for giving her maidservant to Jacob. The Tribe of Issachar became renowned throughout Israel’s history not for political ambition or worldly conquest, but for scholarship, spiritual discernment, and dedicated labor.

1. The Prophecy of the Strong Donkey and Peaceful Rest
When Jacob pronounced his deathbed blessing over his sons in Genesis 49, he described Issachar using the metaphor of a sturdy, reliable pack animal:
"Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between two burdens. He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant; so he bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant at forced labor." — Genesis 49:14–15
Unlike wild beasts of prey, the strong donkey symbolized quiet endurance, agricultural diligence, and a preference for peaceful productivity over aggressive expansion. Their tribal emblem became either a donkey carrying a burden or astronomical symbols representing their calendar mastery.

2. Strategic Valley Lands and Prophetic Discernment
When Canaan was distributed, Issachar inherited the extraordinarily fertile Jezreel Valley (Esdraelon), bordered by Mount Tabor and the Jordan River.
-
The Breadbasket of Israel: Their land was among the richest agricultural regions in the nation, providing vast harvests of grain, oil, and wine.
-
Understanding the Times: Issachar’s greatest biblical distinction appears in 1 Chronicles 12:32 when David was crowned king at Hebron. While other tribes sent thousands of soldiers, Issachar sent 200 chiefs who were described as "men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do."
-
Scholarly Leadership: Rabbinic tradition holds that while Zebulun engaged in maritime trade, they financially supported Issachar so that Issachar could dedicate themselves full-time to studying the Torah, observing celestial cycles, and calculating the sacred calendar.
