Apostle Philip biography

Apostle Philip, Philip, the Apostle, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. He comes from Bethsaida, a town by the Sea of Galilee. He was well versed in Jewish scriptures. When Jesus asked Philip to follow Him, he immediately recognizes Jesus as the One about whom Moses and other prophets have prophesied.

One can say that he was the first evangelist. He immediately went to his friend Nathanael and invited him to come and see Jesus. Thus, he played an active role in bringing another apostle to Jesus.

Of all the disciples of Christ, Philip seems to be the most approachable person. The Greeks who came to worship at a feast in Jerusalem first approached Philip asking, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” From the account of John of the feeding of the five thousand, the Bible scholars infer that Philip may have been in charge of arranging food for Jesus and the disciples during their missionary journeys.

It is recorded in the Bible that during the Last Supper, Philip asks Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” (John 14:8). Surprised at his request, Jesus replied, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. (John 14:9).

This shows that though his knowledge about Christ was limited initially, he gradually realized the complete truth. This is evident from the ministry that he did after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost with the rest of the disciples. Tradition holds that Philip preached the Gospel in Scythia (a region in central Eurasia), Syria, and Phrygia (Turkey). According to church history, Philip is believed to be stoned to death.
