Mary Floyd Cushman ministry in Africa
She was fondly called ‘Doctor Mary’ by them. Despite the surrounding dangers, she did intensive traveling to distant places to provide health care. Her staff primarily consisted of indigenous people whom she had personally trained. She embraced the local culture, which helped her to connect with the people and win their souls for Christ.
She witnessed to her patients and also worked alongside the local church to encourage the believers to grow in Christ. As a medical missionary, Cushman believed in using effective medical practices from other cultures. Hence, she learned from the people there and adopted their best practices for her own practice with an open mind.
She also encouraged the people there to provide more advanced education for their children so that they could run the hospital themselves. In her old age, while she was not practicing, she traveled across America and raised funds to continue the work in Angola. After faithfully serving the Lord, Cushman finally went to be with Him in 1965 at a ripe old age of 95.
