Napthali - The Sixth Tribe of Israel
A Doe Set Free: The Grace and Swiftness of the Tribe of Naphtali
Naphtali was the sixth son of Jacob, born to Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid. His name (Naphtali) means "My Struggle" or "Wrestling," marking Rachel’s fierce prayer duel with her sister Leah. Yet despite a name born from sibling rivalry, the Tribe of Naphtali became famous for agility, eloquent speech, and swift action in battle.

1. The Prophecy of the Hind
When Jacob pronounced his deathbed blessing over his sons in Genesis 49, he described Naphtali with poetic elegance:
"Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns [or uses beautiful words]." — Genesis 49:21
This imagery highlighted two distinct traits: speed and grace. Like a mountain hind navigating steep terrain, Naphtali moved with agility and brought inspiring communication to the nation.
2. Strategic Territory and Military Courage
When land was distributed in Canaan, Naphtali inherited a lush, fertile region in Northern Galilee, stretching along the western shore of the Sea of Galilee up to the Lebanese mountains.
-
The Battle of Mount Tabor: When the prophetess Deborah called Israel to fight the Canaanite general Sisera (Judges 4–5), Barak—a commander from Naphtali—led 10,000 troops down Mount Tabor. Alongside Zebulun, Naphtali fought with extreme bravery, earning high praise in Deborah's victory song.
-
Fertile Blessing: Moses praised the territory in Deuteronomy 33:23, stating Naphtali was "abounding with favor and full of the blessing of the Lord."
-
The Messianic Light: Centuries later, the prophet Isaiah predicted that this region—"Galilee of the Gentiles"—would see a great light. Jesus fulfilled this prophecy by establishing his headquarters in Capernaum, located directly within Naphtali’s historic territory (Matthew 4:13–15).
