Robert Caldwell Biography
Robert Caldwell Biography, was born in a poor but a God-fearing family and started working since he was nine. He had limited formal education but found an opportunity to train at Glasgow University through the London Missionary Society (LMS). After his ordination, he arrived in Madras in 1838 on behalf of LMS. Realizing the need to reach out to the local people, he mastered the Tamil language and started preaching Gospel to the native people.
He later became a distinguished Tamil scholar and wrote ‘A Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian Languages’, which helped the later missionaries to prepare for ministry in this part of the town.
Caldwell was greatly influenced by missionaries like G. U. Pope and Benjamin Schultz and dedicatedly worked for the upliftment of the poor. He was consecrated as the Bishop of Tirunelveli in 1877, after which he undertook a series of projects that changed people’s life.

He established schools in towns and villages and built many notable churches, of which Holy Trinity church at Idayangudi is one. With the help of the native catechists, he developed plans to create orderly Christian communities of the poor. His wife, Eliza, was his strength and support in all his missionary activities.
She contributed significantly to his school-building projects and establishing lace-making industries in the district as a supplementary source of income for local communities. Caldwell’s acquaintance with the Tamil people earned him a wide reputation. However, he remained a simple and humble man throughout his life and never wavered from the great purpose he was called for.
He was an earnest, sympathizing, vigilant shepherd to his sheep. By his Apostolic labors and example, he trained many local people for ministry. His ministry is marked by the improvement in the character and status of the Christians and also those without Christ. After half a century of labor, he went to be with the Lord in 1891.
