Wilfred Grenfell biography, In a small house in Labrador, a young doctor was having his dinner with his wife and a little child. Suddenly, an Eskimo came running asking the doctor to come and save his young son who was seriously ill. The Eskimo’s house was 50 miles away that could only be reached by crossing the moving glacier. The doctor didn’t want to leave his family alone, and traveling on the moving glacier is dangerous that could most probably result in his death.

But his brave wife seeing his indecisiveness whispers to him “Wilfred, He that loveth father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:37). Immediately, the doctor prayed “Lord, protect my loved ones” and set out on a perilous journey on ice to provide medical care.

Such was the sacrificial life of Wilfred Grenfell in Labrador. Wilfred Thomason Grenfell was a legendary medical missionary known for his ministry in the North Atlantic region. During his medical studies, Grenfell accepted Christ in one of the DL Moody’s revival meetings.

Soon he began participating in the ministry and began leading Sunday School. After graduation, he heard about the deplorable lives of fishermen in Labrador from a missionary.

Labrador is a dangerous place where winter lasts for 8 months. But Grenfell took it as a challenge and began the work enthusiastically. Supported by ‘The Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen,’, he hired a ship in 1892 and began providing medical care along the Labrador coast. Soon he began expanding the mission by developing schools, orphanages, and hospitals. Apart from mainland people many aboriginals experienced Christ’s love. His wife Anne was equally brave and gave him comfort, encouragement, and refinement in his ministry.

Until her death in 1938, she kept her bodily infirmities hidden from her husband, lest it discourages him in any way. Having done an inspiring ministry for more than 50 years, Grenfell too went to be with the Lord in 1940 due to a chronic illness.
