“Royal Flying Doctor Service” in Australia is a method for supplying medical service by airplane to remote places where hardly any medical service or communication is available. Who is behind its foundation?

John Flynn was a Presbyterian minister. He studied theology and divinity, and throughout his training, helped some presbyterian ministers in their missionary work in remote places of Australia. After his ordination in 1911, Flynn was appointed at the Smith of Dunesk Mission at Beltana, South Australia. There he understood that there were no medical services available for inland people.

The next year he surveyed the northern territory, prepared reports on lives of the people there, and presented to the Presbyterian Church in 1912. As a result, Australian Inland Mission (A.I.M.) was formed with the aim to minister to the spiritual, social and medical needs of the people in the remote places in Australia inland.

Flynn was appointed to be the head of this new organization. Under his supervision, A.I.M. established medical services in several places. Flynn used his magazine “Inlander” to publicize the plight and needs of the people in northern Australia. Once he wrote “There is no call for sensation… We need action.”

In 1917, Lieutenant Clifford Peel, an army man who was inspired by Flynn’s work, wrote a letter to him suggesting the use of airplanes to bring medical services to remote places. For the next ten years, Flynn worked hard to accomplish it. Finally, in May 1928, “A.I.M. Aerial Medical Service” (Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) from 1955) came into existence.

Flynn also succeeded in establishing radio communication to remote places so that patients can contact the flying doctor in an emergency. In the first year, 225 patients in 26 localities were treated through this service. Now, The RFDS is Australia’s 3rd largest airline and has over 3,50,000 patient contacts every year. John Flynn worked tirelessly till his last breath and died of cancer in 1951.

Beloved, are your kind words towards the needy turning into action?
