Mary Floyd Cushman

Mary Floyd Cushman, was an American medical missionary who worked under great difficulties in the foreign mission field for more than 30 years. Born in a Christian family, she grew up to be a sympathetic woman with a burden to serve the people. She graduated from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1892 and practiced medicine in Farmington.

Birth : 04-07-1870
Home Calling : 1965
Homeland : United States of America
Place of Vision : Angola, Africa

There she was well recognized for her professional skills. However, her desire to serve the people in Africa was realized when the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions appointed her as a medical missionary in African missions.

At the age of 52, Cushman set sail for Angola in Africa with a mission to provide medical care in Angola. She established a clinic at Chilleso and started ministering among the Bantu tribal people.

She was fondly called ‘Doctor Mary’ by them. Despite the surrounding dangers, she did intensive traveling to distant places to provide health care. Her staff primarily consisted of indigenous people whom she had personally trained. She embraced the local culture, which helped her to connect with the people and win their souls for Christ.

She witnessed to her patients and also worked alongside the local church to encourage the believers to grow in Christ. As a medical missionary, Cushman believed in using effective medical practices from other cultures. Hence, she learned from the people there and adopted their best practices for her own practice with an open mind.

She also encouraged the people there to provide more advanced education for their children so that they could run the hospital themselves. In her old age, while she was not practicing, she traveled across America and raised funds to continue the work in Angola. After faithfully serving the Lord, Cushman finally went to be with Him in 1965 at a ripe old age of 95.

Beloved, are you open to the plans and ideas of others without compromising Biblical principles while serving the Lord?
