She then joined the Moody Bible Institute to prepare for the mission field. In 1894, she sailed to China to take responsibility for the recently opened women’s hospital at Lianzhou.

Eleanor Chesnut a Martyr of Christ

She offered all that she had for the development of the hospital. She traveled on horseback to the neighboring villages to provide medical care for the sick and trained the local women as nurses. She also translated books in the Lianzhou dialect, including the Gospel of Matthew. She was well-loved for her kindness.

When the Boxer Rebellion of 1900 started, which killed thousands of missionaries and Chinese Christians, Chesnut, stood firm in her calling. With the political unrest increasing, she was careful to avoid any situation that may disturb the hospital’s functioning. However, on October 29, 1905, a riot broke out in hospital premises.

The missionaries were chased into the streets and beaten. Although Chestnut had a chance to slip away, she was there providing medical care to the children who were wounded in the riot. Finally, Dr. Eleanor Chesnut, too, was beaten and stabbed to death with a pitchfork while three other missionaries and a ten-year-old child were murdered.

The courage of Chesnut inspired many young missionaries to step out in faith and live for the Gospel in China and several parts of the world.
