REUBEN

Reuben - First born tribe of Israel

Reuben (רְאוּבֵן) hold a unique place in biblical history as the firstborn tribe of Israel. Derived from the Hebrew root meaning "See, a son!", the tribe’s legacy is a narrative of leadership lost, loyalty tested, and a life spent living on the frontier.

Key Facts & Symbols

  • Meaning of Name: "Look, a son!" (Genesis 29:32)
  • Parentage: Firstborn son of Jacob and Leah
  • Tribal Symbol: Mandrakes (referencing Genesis 30:14) or Rising Waves/Water (referencing Genesis 49:4)
  • Territory: Transjordan (east of the Jordan River, bordering Moab)

The Lost Birthright

As Jacob's firstborn, Reuben was naturally positioned to inherit the double portion of inheritance, the priesthood, and the kingship/leadership over the twelve brothers. However, Reuben lost his spiritual and structural authority due to a critical misstep: sleeping with Bilhah, his father’s concubine (Genesis 35:22).
When Jacob blessed his sons on his deathbed, he described Reuben’s character and its consequence:
"Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power. Unstable as water, you will no longer excel..."
— Genesis 49:3–4
His birthright was split among his brothers:
  • The Double Inheritance went to Joseph (split between Ephraim and Manasseh).
  • The Kingship went to Judah.
  • The Priesthood went to Levi.

A Character Profile: Flawed, Yet Compassionate

Despite his moral failings, Reuben often displayed a protective, compassionate heart:
  • Saving Joseph: When the brothers plotted to kill Joseph, Reuben intervened, persuading them to throw him into a pit instead—intending to return later and rescue him (Genesis 37:21–22).
  • Pledging His Life: When Jacob refused to let Benjamin go down to Egypt during the famine, Reuben offered his own sons' lives as collateral for Benjamin's safety (Genesis 42:37).

Settling East of the Jordan

When Israel approached the Promised Land, the tribe of Reuben—having vast herds of livestock—requested to settle on the fertile pasturelands east of the Jordan River (Transjordan), along with Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh.
Moses granted this on one condition: they had to cross over and lead the military fight alongside the other tribes to conquer Canaan before settling down. Reuben honored this oath, fighting at the front lines before returning to their eastern territory.

The Fall of the Tribe

Because of their geography east of the Jordan, the tribe of Reuben was geographically exposed to eastern invaders like Moab and Aram. Over centuries, the tribe gradually faded in influence and produced no major judges, kings, or notable prophet leaders in biblical record.
Eventually, around 722 BCE, the tribe of Reuben was among the first taken into captivity during the Assyrian invasion, becoming part of the "Ten Lost Tribes".

The Takeaway

Reuben’s journey carries a timeless lesson: Potential is nothing without restraint. Though gifted with position, passion, and natural leadership, instability prevented the tribe from stepping into its full destiny. Yet Moses left them with a blessing of survival and resilience:

"Let Reuben live and not die, nor his people be few." — Deuteronomy 33:6
